Overcoming Self Limiting Beliefs - you can do it!

Updated: Aug 11, 2023

What are self limiting beliefs, what are some examples, and how do I work to overcome them? Those are all great questions that we will have a look at below and why its important to address those unconscious biases as you work to become the best version of yourself.

A self limiting belief is a false accusation or judgement about yourself that you may think is true, but it's holding you back! I mean, you are what you think right? Working on building your positive mindset and addressing those limits you or others have placed on yourself are crucial to your happiness and success in your personal life and in business.

Popular Self Limiting Beliefs

Over the last few years I have really had to come face to face with some of my own limiting beliefs and work towards overcoming them. Some of them including, "I'm not smart enough to run my own business", "I can't speak my truth and put myself out there", and "I don't have the resources needed to be successful". Guess what, they all stem from fear! Afraid to make a mistake, afraid to fail, and afraid to be judged. If I didn't recognize those limiting beliefs, and go for it anyway, I would not be reaching my two year anniversary as a business owner at the end of this month, and I most definitely would not be starting this blog discussing publicly what is holding me back.

Over the last few years I have realized I do absolutely have the resources, tools, and brains to run a successful tax office, as long as I show up each day as my best self and strive to do the best I can for my clients, then I am ahead of where I was yesterday. I have accepted I will make mistakes, I mean, I'm human, but as long as I learn from them and promise to do better then I will never fail. As for being judged, I had to recognize that when someone judges you, that's a reflection of them, not me. I had to learn to not take criticism and judgements personally. If the person criticizing you is not in the position you want to be in, then their opinion doesn't matter.

Quote on limiting beliefs

If you want to address your own limiting beliefs, the best first step is to figure out what they are. Identify your thoughts and patterns that may be holding you back, they may be those thoughts that pop up trying to protect you from future pain or embarrassment, and write them down somewhere. Now, try looking at those statements from a bird's eye view, do they have merit, or are you telling yourself made up stories?

Now that you have realized YOU HAVE NO LIMITS it's time to change your mindset!

You can work toward changing your mindset using positive affirmations, whenever those negative self beliefs (or anything negative really) pop up in your head notice them, and replace them with something positive. Say it with me;

Positive Affirmations

Great! Now for the most important part............ DON'T GIVE UP! Keep addressing those limits you have placed on yourself and keep working on turning them into positive thoughts, it takes time. I still struggle with those nasty thoughts, they like to pop up from time to time to remind me that its natural to fear the unknown, but I know I can manifest anything I put my mind too. Another bonus, practicing positive affirmations have been proven to reduce stress and increase your mental health through the behavioral changes that follow changing your thought patterns.

You are worthy of all the success and there is nothing you cannot overcome. Now go believe in yourself!

What are some of the limiting beliefs you recognize you have put on yourself? What do you plan on doing to overcome them? I want to hear about it in the comments!
